With the establishment of a technical committee to study the Lekki Comprehensive Master Plan (2021–2041), one of the four significant growth corridors in the State, the Lagos State Government has taken action to address the issues caused by the neighborhood's rapid growth.
The committee was officially established on Thursday in Alausa, Ikeja, by Dr. Idris Salako, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, who noted that the action is a step in realizing the Greater Lagos concept.
The Commissioner, who was represented by the Director of the Ministry's Technical Services Department, Tpl. Bola Aliu, claimed that the intermittent growth in physical development within the sub-region made the evaluation vital for maintaining control over spatial activities.
What the Lagos State Commissioner of Physical Planning and Urban Development is saying;
"The revision of the Operative Development Plan is in line with the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda of the administration as mandated in the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning Law 2019," Salako added (as amended). Every five years, Plans may be amended or reviewed under the Law.
He stated that Messrs Mepas and Prodel Nigeria Limited, a company of physical planning and development experts, had been given the project. He then asked for the technical committee members' active cooperation and support in order to provide pertinent and timely information that will help the consultant deliver the plan on time.
Review to address physical planning challenges associated with rapid growth
- The Lekki axis, which is home to growth pole developments like the Free Trade Zone, Dangote Refineries, the proposed Lekki Deep Sea Port, and Lagos International Airport, has experienced dynamic growth and development, according to Tpl. Oladeinde Lateef Olawale, Director, Regional and Master Plan Department, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, who also spoke at the ceremony.
- "The review will address the challenges and fix existing physical issues of increasing urbanization, insufficient infrastructure, and development pressure, leading to sustainable growth," he stated.
- I must add that the review procedure will guarantee that all gaps found in the current plan (2013-2033) are effectively addressed.
- He pointed out that the Technical Committee, which will oversee the project and validate the input provided by participating MDAs, must be established before the assessment of the plan can be finished.
Team of 15 experts to execute the project
- Tpl. Victor Emdin, the project's lead consultant, noted that the administration has had an active policy to bring physical planning to the forefront of its activities since since Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu took office.
- He said, "A team made up of over fifteen experts has been put together to carry out the exercise designed to identify issues like chaotic traffic, poor intra-state and inter-state connectivity, poor environmental management - refuse collection and disposal, poor drainage and flooding system, and so forth. In order to properly conduct the review and assure a legacy performance for all stakeholders, we are now coordinating with MDAs.
